9 Things To Know About Using Essential Oils

9 Things to Know About Essential Oils

Essential Oils are one of my favorite things but there are 9 things that everyone should know about using essential oils. Our family has been using them for over a decade now and I will forever be grateful for them and what they have done for us.

They are amazing, they smell great, can help support the body and work wonders for natural remedies. I just want to cover a few things though that I personally think are very important to know about them.

Keep in mind, I am not a doctor, I am just a Mama who loves finding natural options for her family. My education on oils and supplements and Natural Wellness is how our family has used these over the years and the benefits we have seen. You are the gatekeeper of your home and know your family so please keep that in mind while following us on this journey. Also, when speaking about essential oils, we use Young Living in our family and have for over six years. These are the oils that I have researched and feel comfortable with for our family. Not all oils and supplements are created equal. I fully believe there are other options out there other than to just medicate and slap a band aid on things.

Let’s dive in!

ONE

Not all essential oils are created equal. I talk a lot about this here. The essential oil industry is not regulated allowing companies to label bottles with claims of being pure even if they contain synthetics, additives or fragrances. They can be labeled pure even if they have been distilled with chemicals or if the plants were treated with pesticides. You must trust where you are getting your essential oils from, especially if you are using them for a medicinal purpose.

TWO

One or two drops of essential oils can go a long way! Less is more. You only need a drop or two in most cases. They are potent and concentrated.

THREE

Pay attention to your body. Headaches and/or skin irritations while rare are still possible. Your body may be detoxing which is not a bad thing but be aware. Stop using that oil or dilute for your body to adjust slower. If your body is detoxing, that means the oil is working and trying to clean house which is the goal. But still… be smart about it. Ask questions if needed.

FOUR

Essential oils can be amazing for the WHOLE family! Kiddos, babies, adults, even our fur babies. I know there is a lot of controversy out there but I feel completely empowered knowing what I have learned to know if you are using the correct, pure essential oils that they can benefit the whole family, and I want you to feel that too! I have seen what they can do and they are amazing.

FIVE

Water and oil don’t mix. Essential oils are hydrophobic, meaning they are an oil that will not mix with water. Be sure to use a proper emulsifier when adding to water. It is not recommended to drop essential oils directly into the bath if using in that manner. You will want to add them to a carrier oil or an Epsom salt before adding to the water.

SIX

Most citrus essential oils are considered photosensitive so be mindful when applying those if you will be out in the sun soon after. Photosensitive essential oils can heighten skin sensitivity when exposed to UV rays making it easier to burn. It is best to avoid these oils to skin that will be in direct sunlight.

SEVEN

You can apply essential oils topically for where you are seeking support. For neck pain, apply to the neck, stomach ache, apply to the stomach, and so forth. If you are needing to use essential oils for emotional support, the quickest way to support the emotional part of our brain is through our sense of smell! You would apply to neck, shoulders, or behind ears.

EIGHT

Did you know that a scent can transform a mood? It’s fascinating and amazing! Due to the complex chemical constituents in essential oils, they can play a role in transforming emotions and reducing stress. They are fantastic to have on hand for rough days, for kiddos with high emotions, babies to feel comforted and even when Mama needs a moment. Inhale slowly and count to 10 a few times. It’s amazing.

NINE

There is not a “one size fits all” with essential oils. Sure Lavender essential oil is amazing for calming and for sleep for most but some may find they have a better response to Cedarwood. That is ok, use what works for you! We are all different and have different preferences.
