Chlorine Detox with a Natural Solution! We don’t have to sacrifice days in the pool, here are simple ways to keep your body healthy.
I don’t know about you but swimming when it is hot outside is one of our favorite ways to spend the hot summer days. It is a fantastic way for our kiddos and even us to stay active outdoors while staying cool from the high heat.
Depending on where you are swimming though will determine the kind of water you are swimming in. If you have a pool at home or swim in public pools odds are you are swimming in some type of chlorine. Which we want clean water right, especially in public pools but sometimes prolonged exposure to chlorine water can come with some irritations.
Why type of irritations can chlorine cause?
Chlorine while being used to keep pools clean can come with several side effects such as:
- Drying of the skin
- Irritation to the eyes
- Sore Throat
- Headaches
- Coughing
- Respiratory issues if inhaled frequently
- Dry and Brittle Hair – Anyone ever have green hair growing up or was it just me?
Don’t worry though!
We can still get to enjoy pool filled days while minimizing the impact of chlorine on our kiddos and even on our own bodies. And the best part is they are super simple!

Chlorine Detox – Simple ways to help protect and detox the body from chlorine.
Vitamin C
Taking Vitamin C daily, especially on the days that you will be swimming can help combat the oxidative stress caused by chlorine exposure. You can include plenty of fruits like oranges, strawberries, and kiwi and vegetables like bell peppers and broccoli in your poolside snacks. Supplementing with Super C Chewables which taste yummy and are easy to get kiddos to take is also one very simple way to get Vitamin C in your family.. You will want to increase to four of these on your big swimming days!
Shower Immediately
It is best to rinse off before and after swimming. Rinsing off before swimming can saturate your skin and hair with clean water. This will prevent excessive absorption of chlorinated water. And then, a thorough shower after swimming will help to remove chlorine from your skin and hair as well.
Choose A Safe Sunscreen
I dive (haha, pun intended) into the Sun and Sunscreen here but making sure that you are choosing a sunscreen with a mineral filter like Young Livings Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 will help your by providing a protective barrier on your skin as well. Chemical sunscreens not only absorb into your bloodstream and pose other health risks, but they start to degrade when introduce to both sun rays AND chlorine in swimming pools, making them even less effective. And combining a whole bunch of chemicals at one time on our whole body just isn’t going to be good for anyone.
Natural Detox Baths
Detox Baths… this is seriously one of my favorite things!!! I LOVE detox baths for the whole family! They are so easy and simple and provide so much help with a variety of things. I have my whole Detox Bath How To here for ya! Soaking in a warm bath with Epsom salts, baking soda, peroxide after swimming in a pool can help remove chlorine from your skin and hair while providing a relaxing experience. It’s the best excuse for Moms to take a bath, chlorine detox, sniffles, back ache, pretty much you can use any reason to take a bath! You’re welcome! You can also add supportive essential oils like Purification, Geranium, or Lemon to help with the chlorine detox. Be sure though to add your essential oil to your baking soda or Epsom Salt before adding it to the water.
Make A Pool Detox Roller
Add 20 drops of Geranium, 15 drops Purification, 5 drops Tea Tree and 10 drops of Lemon essential oil to a 10 ml roller bottle. Top with liquid coconut oil and toss into your pool bag to roll onto spines whenever swimming is done and again after everyone is showered and cleaned up!

Natural Bug Spray – Why A Natural Option is Important?
What is Ningxia Red and what are the Benefits?
Now I am by no means a doctor, I am just a Mama who loves finding natural options for her family. My education on oils is how our family has used these over the years and the benefits we have seen. You are the gatekeeper of your home and know your family so please keep that in mind while following us on this journey. Also, when speaking about essential oils, we use Young Living in our family and have for over six years. These are the oils that I have researched and feel comfortable with for our family and not all oils are created equal.
